De Hervester mijnsiedeling werd in 1912 aangelegd tussen de huidige Halterner Straße en de Lippe: Aan de oostzijde ontstond het katholieke gebied met de Josefschule en de Josefkirche, aan de westzijde het protestantse district met de Augustaschule en de huidige Kreuzkirche.
Vandaag de dag zijn de mijnen gesloten, het werk ligt niet meer voor de deur. "Het nieuwe gebruik van de mijnbouwgrond en het creëren van toekomstbestendige werkplekken zijn een grote uitdaging," geeft Lütkenhorst toe dat de structurele veranderingen nog niet zoals gewenst zijn doorgevoerd. Toch mag men de wijk Hervest niet slecht praten: Door renovatie en modernisering heeft de woningbouw een heel eigen charme ontwikkeld.
