De heuvel is aangelegd op een moreneheuvel uit de ijstijd. Voor zover men kan beoordelen op basis van de opmeting, was de heuvel oorspronkelijk 18 m in diameter en 4 m hoog. Helaas is de hele bovenste helft door de tijd heen weggegraven, zodat er vandaag de dag van het bovenste deel van de heuvel alleen nog een 5 m brede en 1 m hoge bobbel over is.
Hellehøj ligt 89 m boven zeeniveau. De heuvel werd in 1972 beschermd als uitzichtsbescherming, historische en recreatieve bescherming.
De granieten blok op de heuvel is een trigonometrisch station, dat door de Geodatastyrelsen wordt gebruikt als fixpunt bij kaartenmetingen.
