De Todt Batterij is genoemd naar Fritz Todt. Hij was een generaal, maar vooral een ingenieur-bouwkundige van het 3de Rijk, en een goede vriend van Adolf Hitler. Deze laatste vertrouwde hem in 1933 de realisatie van de autostrades in Duitsland toe met als doel de werkloosheid terug te verminderen.
In 1935 richtte hij een paramilitaire organisatie op: het OT (Organisatie Todt). Hij liet het O.T. de Siegfriedlinie realiseren met het oog op de operatie Seelöwe (de invasie in Engeland). Dit project werd afgeblazen in 1940 door Hitler, en zo werd de Siegfriedlinie omgevormd tot een onderdeel van de verdedigingslinie de Atlantikwall.
Op 8 februari 1942 crashte de Junkers JU 52 die dokter Fritz Todt vervoerde, op mysterieuze wijze bij het opstijgen. Er waren geen overlevenden. Batterij Siegfried werd op 10 februari 1942 hernoemd tot Batterij Todt ter ere van zijn bouwmeester.
