Van 1980 tot 1985 werd de noordelijke zeedijk door het waterschap Ommelanderzeedijk op deltahoogte gebracht, waarbij het noodzakelijk was de oude sluis uit 1811 te vervangen door een nieuw afwateringsgemaal. De oude, dichtgemetselde sluis werd in 1986 onderdeel van een land art project, een steenmozaïek, ontworpen door J.H. van Loon. Dit kunstwerk is reeds van verre te zien.
