Grundlagt i 1875 efter planerne fra landskabsarkitekten Édouard Keilig, som også designede Bois de la Cambre, ligger det på et stykke af Soignes på cirka tredivde ha. Den gyldne periode for denne institution varede fra 1880 til 1940. Derefter gik det galt: hestene tog i 1995 en sidste runde på banen, og stedet blev gradvist forladt, med undtagelse af en golfbane, der siden 1988 har været beliggende midt i den enorme ovale bane.
