Søen ligger i et rekreativt område og bruges til sejlads, surfing, dykning, kanosejlads og som badevandssted. Ved søen ligger det friluftsbad Klein Wangerooge. Kvaliteten af badevandet er blevet overvåget siden 1991, normalt uden anmærkninger. I 2003 og 2005 var badet dog lukket i mindst 14 dage i bade sæsonen.
