Den "fader" af Nieuwvliet-Dorp er Jan Adornis. Denne forretningsmand fra Brugge grundlagde byen i 1527. For det måtte han dæmme en række marsk, hvilket førte til, at St. Jans Polder opstod. Da han kom hertil, havde du det Sorte Hul. Det var det midterste af de tre strømme mellem Cadzand og Groede. I virkeligheden er Nieuwvliet-Dorp broen mellem disse to tidligere øer.
