Das Gebiet der Moeren fällt mit einem "Polder" zusammen. Dies ist die Bezeichnung für einen natürlichen See oder eine künstliche Fläche, die durch Entwässerung trocken gelegt wurde. Die ältesten Polder befinden sich in Nordholland und stammen aus der Zeit kurz vor 1550. Dieser stammt aus etwas später. Es war der Antwerpeneser Wenceslas Cobergher, der zwischen 1622 und 1626 es schaffte, hier den Süßwassersee trocken zu pumpen. Dieser Ort war jedoch ein strategischer Platz, und das trocken gelegene Gebiet wurde später mehrfach Überschwemmungen ausgesetzt. Erst 1815 wurde das Gebiet endgültig in Ackerland umgewandelt.
