Die IJzer ist der einzige Fluss auf belgischem Gebiet, der direkt in die Nordsee mündet und hat eine Gesamtlänge von 75 Kilometer. Die Quellen liegen in der Nähe von der nordfranzösischen Stadt Kassel auf einer Höhe von 75 m über Meereshöhe. Bei Roesbrugge - Haringe fließt die IJzer in unser Land. Der Kemmelbach und die Ieperlee sind die zwei wichtigsten Nebenflüsse. Der Unterlauf der IJzer ist kanalisiert und schiffbar für Schiffe bis 300 T. Südlich von Diksmuide, in der Nähe von Lo und Pollinkhove, erreicht die IJzer das flache Polderland. Auf dem Gebiet von Sint-Joris, zwischen der Uniebrücke und der kleinen Bucht von Nieuwendamme, wurde im Jahre 1979 der IJzerkanal für den Bau eines Speicherbeckens verbreitert.
Für diejenigen, die auf eine abenteuerliche Art und Weise den Charme der Polderlandschaft kennen lernen möchten, ist eine touristische Bootsfahrt auf der IJzer zwischen Nieuwpoort und Diksmuide sicherlich eine Empfehlung.
