Das Getränk wurde nach diesem burgundischen Priester, Félix Kir, benannt, der von 1876 bis 1968 lebte. Dieser Cocktail basiert auf Crème de Cassis und dem Weißwein Bourgogne Aligoté. Für Kir Royal wird der Weißwein durch Champagner oder anderen Sekt ersetzt.
