The area of the Moeren coincides with a "polder". This is the term for a natural lake or an artificial pond that has been drained by pumping. The oldest polders are found in North Holland and date from just before 1550. This one dates from slightly later. It was the Antwerpenaar Wenceslas Cobergher who succeeded in draining the freshwater lake here between 1622 and 1626. However, this location was a strategic place, and the drained area was later flooded several times. It was not until 1815 that the area was definitively converted into agricultural land.
