The Moeren are a polders. At the end of the Middle Ages, the area of The Moeren consisted of a low-lying marsh landscape with two large ponds, the Kleine and the Grote Moere, where peat formed. In the Middle Ages, the old peat was dug up as turf here. In the early seventeenth century, the then rulers of the Southern Netherlands, Archduke Albrecht and Archduchess Isabella, showed interest in a possible reclamation of the area. Not only would the land reclamation mean a welcome expansion of the agricultural area, but the marsh was also negatively known as a refuge for robbers and suspects and as a source of various diseases.
