En 1936, el Ministerio de Aviación del Reich alemán (RLM) apoyó a Felix Wankel para fabricar un motor funcional con pistón rotativo. El RLM estaba muy interesado en esto porque estaban muy ocupados desarrollando una fuerza aérea que más tarde sería utilizada en la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Gracias a este apoyo, Felix Wankel pudo construir un laboratorio más grande, el Wankel Versuchswerkstatt en Lindau, cerca del Lago de Constanza. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Wankel pudo continuar su trabajo de investigación gracias al apoyo del Reich. En 1945, su laboratorio fue desmantelado por los aliados. No fue hasta 1951 que el investigador reanudó sus experimentos, esta vez en su propia casa en Lindau, donde fundó la Technische Entwicklungsstelle (TES).
