En 1369 se construyó una iglesia de madera y paja en el lugar de la actual Grote Kerk en Kerkplein. Después de la consagración en 1370, la iglesia continuó siendo construida y renovada. La primera expansión en 1405 incluyó un coro de piedra. Los trabajos en las dos naves laterales comenzaron en 1429 y el ábside se finalizó en 1480 y se completó en 1500. En 1519, se amplió el transepto sur. En 1878, la iglesia fue completamente destruida por un rayo. Como reemplazo de la iglesia quemada, se construyó la actual Grote Kerk entre 1881 y 1883.
La Grote Kerk fue cerrada en 1968 debido a los oficios y se vendió en 1984 para transformarla en tiendas y apartamentos. Las tiendas ya han cerrado y se han construido un restaurante y un hotel.
