Ce café existe depuis environ 1870 et portait alors le nom de ‘De Goude Leeuw’. Le nom actuel ‘De Vlaamse Leeuw’ a été adopté en 1910. (Source J. De Brouwer). Le premier exploitant du café était un certain Christiaan Van Ginderdeuren. À cette époque, le café était une étape (pour les chevaux) et une auberge. Le petit-fils de Christiaan, Philemon Van Ginderdeuren, a poursuivi le développement de l'établissement et en 1919, Louis Couck et sa femme ont repris le café. En 1933, l'affaire a été confiée à Odile Couck et Jerome Van Daele. En 1956, le café a été vendu à la brasserie Atlas.
