La localité, qui compte aujourd'hui plus de 6 700 habitants, a été mentionnée pour la première fois par écrit en 1116, sous le nom de Brath. Elle faisait partie du Duché de Gueldre et, à partir de 1614, de Gueldre et de Berg. En 1815, elle est devenue prussienne. Bracht est le lieu de naissance du peintre et graphiste Hendrick Goltzius.
À l'ouest de Bracht se trouve la vaste forêt de Brachter Wald, qui s'étend jusqu'à la frontière germano-néerlandaise et se termine par une abrupt bord escarpé du plateau de la Meuse.
