Het voormalige Grotenhoutbos is een relict van het domaniaal bos met een imposant drevencomplex dat als jachtgebied diende voor de hertogen van Brabant, later heren van Turnhout. Dit bosdomein - een groot, aaneengesloten, bosrijk gebied in een gaaf, open landbouwgebied - is het enige oud boscomplex van die grootteorde in de Kempen dat minstens sinds de middeleeuwen aanwezig is gebleven. In het bos komen kwetsbare oude vegetaties voor met zeldzame planten gebonden aan een bosmilieu.
