El monument és obra de l'escultor valencià Manuel Boix i va ser inaugurat el 19 de setembre de 1997. L'escultura és un homenatge a l'homenatge de Jerez a la persona que va fer gran la indústria del xerès alhora que va promoure millores socials a la comunitat de Jerez.
Manuel María González Ángel va néixer a Sanlúcar de Barrameda el 1812 i va morir a Jerez el 1887.
Es va establir a Jerez l'any 1835 amb 23 anys i va iniciar l'actual empresa de cellers González Byass a Jerez. Assessorat pel seu oncle José , va donar el nom a la famosa marca i vaixell insígnia de l'empresa: TIO PEPE .
Manuel María va aconseguir convertir-se en el primer exportador de vins de xerès . Va fundar diverses institucions comercials importants i va col·laborar en moltes altres empreses, entre elles la línia del ferrocarril de Sanlúcar a Bonanza.
