El Colós de Rodes va ser una gegantina estàtua del déu Hèlios construïda a l'illa de Rodes en el segle III aC per Cares de Lindos. La seva grandària era aproximadament la de la moderna Estàtua de la Llibertat, situada a Nova York, tot i que descansava sobre una plataforma menys elevada. Va ser una de les Set Meravelles del Món Antic.
Alexandre el Gran, mort a una edat primerenca, no va arribar a temps de designar successor. Llavors, van esclatar fortes disputes entre els seus generals, els diàdocs, tres dels quals es van acabar dividint la major part de l'imperi a l'àrea de la Mediterrània.
