Von der Unionbrücke aus kann man heute die gesamte IJzerfront überblicken, bis hin zum IJzerturm in Diksmuide. Die Unionbrücke ist zusammen mit der Schoorbakkebrug und der Tervatebrug (Stuivekenskerke) von lebenswichtiger Bedeutung. Wer die Brücken besitzt, hat das Sagen über die IJzer.
Wenn die Situation unhaltbar wird, sprengen die Belgier die Brücke in die Luft. Dennoch erreichen die Deutschen die IJzer und nehmen Sint-Joris ein. Glücklicherweise bringen die Überflutungen in letzter Minute Rettung.
Sint-Joris bleibt vier Jahre lang eine deutsche Vorposten, ganz in der Nähe der Schleusen von Nieuwpoort, von wo aus die Belgier die Überflutung aufrechterhalten.
