Von 1914 bis 1918 war die Westhoek Schauplatz des Ersten Weltkriegs. Hunderttausende Soldaten aus mehr als 20 Nationalitäten fielen. Nach den oft sinnlosen Schlachten und den zahlreichen Zerstörungen erhob sich die Westhoek aus seiner Asche.
