Nelsons Säule wurde zu Ehren des großen Helden Admiral Horatio Nelson errichtet. Er wurde während der Schlacht von Trafalgar auf dem Achterdeck des Schiffs Victory erschossen. Eine Musketenkugel traf Nelson in die linke Schulter und durchdrang seine Wirbelsäule in den sechsten und siebten Brustwirbel. Nelson rief aus: "Sie haben endlich Erfolg gehabt, ich bin tot."
Einigen Quellen zufolge wurde sein Leichnam in ein Fass mit Brandy gelegt, um ihn auf der langen Heimreise zu konservieren. Und dass die Besatzung es nicht störte, dass sein Körper im Brandy zersetzte, um einen Schluck von der Flüssigkeit um ihn herum zu bekommen.
