Mattemburgh is an estate located north of Hoogerheide and Woensdrecht and on both sides of the road between Bergen op Zoom and Woensdrecht. The estate measures 600 ha. The estate was founded by P.J. Cuypers, who was mayor of Bergen op Zoom from 1818-1827. He bought land from 1807, and his widow, Maria van Mattemburgh, founded the manor in 1847. The style garden was laid out between 1843 and 1878. Cuypers' great-granddaughter, Marie Louise Cuypers, married the French count Pelletier de Chambure, to which she owed her nickname the countess. When the countess died in 1967, she asked her husband to sell the estate to the Brabants Landschap Foundation, which happened in 1970. The garden and the manor house were also donated to the Brabants Landschap after the count's death in 1982.
