La historia de Kylemore - tanto del castillo como de la abadía - es una historia muy notable. La suerte, que experimentaron los residentes, desde el romance y la felicidad hasta la desesperación y el coraje, conforma una fascinante historia que abarca 150 años. Kylemore ha sido habitada desde 1920 por una comunidad de monjas benedictinas. Se establecieron aquí después de que su abadía en Ypres (B) fuera destruida durante la Primera Guerra Mundial. Desde su llegada a Kylemore, las monjas fundaron la reconocida escuela para chicas a nivel internacional y comenzaron la restauración de la abadía, la iglesia gótica y los jardines para restaurar la finca a su antigua gloria.
