Nous savons que le scientifique Albert Einstein a passé par De Haan en 1933 lors de son voyage d'Allemagne. Einstein était alors mondialement connu, car il avait reçu le prix Nobel de physique et avait profondément bouleversé le monde scientifique avec ses articles sur la théorie de la relativité. En tant que juif et pacifiste convaincu, il fuyait l'horreur de l'émergence du nazisme en Allemagne. À De Haan, il a rencontré le célèbre peintre James Ensor. Ils ont déjeuné au restaurant Au Coeur Volant le 2 août 1933. Le Coeur Volant a été démoli il y a 15 ans et remplacé par une villa d'appartements. En face, il y a une petite place où une statue d'Einstein a été installée il y a quelques années. Le Coeur Volant était le seul restaurant 2 étoiles dont De Haan disposait.
