Construit au XVe et renforcé au XVIIIe siècle, le Gros Mur soutient le terre-plein sur lequel reposent l’église et le parvis. Il assure à la fois une fonction défensive (rempart) et une fonction urbanistique (soutènement). Il subsiste quelques pans de mur de l’enceinte d’environ 350 mètres érigée au XIVe siècle. Huit des neuf portes fortifiées qui servaient de péage ont été détruites pendant les guerres de Religion. Seule subsiste la porte de Lyon, sous le Gros Mur.
