Attaque sur le pont ferroviaire et le pont routier
Le 20 septembre, une nouvelle tentative a commencé pour atteindre le pont routier, cette fois avec une approche depuis les rues situées plus à l'ouest du pont. Les Américains y ont eu plus de succès et la défense allemande a été repoussée jusqu'à la colline près du Valkhof, qui se trouve à côté du pont. Avec de lourdes bombardements et des combats de maison à maison, l'accès au Waalbrug a enfin été atteint vers six heures du soir.
