Il tunnel Kennedy è un'importante galleria stradale, ferroviaria e ciclabile sotto l'Escalda. Il tunnel fa parte dell'autostrada R1 attorno alla città di Anversa. Il tunnel è stato aperto al traffico stradale il 31 maggio 1969 e a quello ferroviario il 1 febbraio 1970. Il tunnel è stato dedicato a John F. Kennedy, il trentacinquesimo presidente degli Stati Uniti. I piani per questo tunnel risalgono già agli anni cinquanta. Tra il 1945 e il 1960, il volume di traffico che passava attraverso il tunnel Waasland era aumentato di cinque volte, creando alla fine degli anni cinquanta un'insostenibile strozzatura. Nel 1958, il progetto per l'E3 era pronto e fu emesso un invito a presentare offerte per un ponte o un tunnel. Nel 1963, il ministro Georges Bohy decise a favore di un tunnel, che fu realizzato in meno di dieci anni.
