Kermt è entrata nei libri di storia perché qui, nel 1831, si svolse la Battaglia di Kermt durante la Decima Campagna, un conflitto tra il giovanissimo Belgio e l'esercito olandese desideroso di rivincita. La battaglia ebbe luogo vicino all'abbazia di Herkenrode.
