Il Brusselpoort è un imponente e massiccio edificio del XIII secolo situato proprio nel mezzo della tangenziale di Mechelen.
La Porta della Città Vecchia è la più alta delle dodici porte che furono costruite come mura della città. Pertanto, il cancello era originariamente chiamato "Overste Poort". In questo periodo fu costruita anche un'altra porta, la "Brusselse Poort" . Quando la vecchia Brusselse Poort fu demolita e la Nieuwe Steenweg a Bruxelles raggiunse Mechelen, si decise di ribattezzarla "Overste Poort".
Il Brusselpoort è l' unico ancora esistente a Mechelen. Sfortunatamente, il cancello di ferro fu demolito già nel XVIII secolo.
Brusselpoort fungeva da stazione di polizia , in seguito come sala riunioni e studio d'arte del famoso artista Alfred Ost. Per un breve periodo, il Brusselpoort è stato utilizzato come museo municipale sotto l'ala dei Musei municipali di Mechelen.
