Già ai tempi dei Romani c'era un insediamento qui chiamato Caspingium, situato lungo il heerweg meridionale (strada per l'esercito) tra Noviomagus (Nimega) e Lugdunum Batavorum (Katwijk). Sono stati fatti diversi ritrovamenti romani in e intorno ad Asperen.
Nel 1314 ad Asperen furono concessi diritti di città.
A nord di Asperen lungo il Linge si trova la ruota del Galgenwiel. Una ruota è una pozzanghera profonda che si è formata durante una breccia della diga.
