Il Canale di Apeldoorn va dall'IJssel presso Dieren all'IJssel presso Hattem. Ha avuto la funzione di "canale laterale" parallelo all'IJssel dal 1868 al 1961. In caso di livelli di fiume bassi e alti, l'IJssel era molto difficile da navigare a causa della scarsa profondità dell'acqua e della forte corrente. Il percorso attraverso il canale era quindi, in particolare per le piccole imbarcazioni, molto attraente.
Il canale ha ancora una funzione nella gestione delle acque della zona. A scopo di approvvigionamento idrico, il canale è alimentato da sorgenti e ruscelli della Veluwe. Una sorgente o sprengebreek è un ruscello scavato o deviato dall'uomo con tali sorgenti scavate che portano in superficie acqua sotterranea sotto pressione. I ruscelli sprenge erano utilizzati soprattutto per azionare mulini ad acqua e/o per fornire acqua alle lavanderie.
