De bouw van de toren werd voltooid tijdens het bewind van Valéran III van Luxemburg in de 14e eeuw. Het is 22 meter hoog en zijn militaire functie komt tot uiting in de schietgaten, kanonpoorten en machicoulissen. In de middeleeuwen was de toren van Valéran een van de toegangspoorten van de stad. In de kamers van de toren werden door de gevangenen inscripties op de muren gegraveerd, waarvan de meest leesbare luidt: "Ik werd in deze helse kerker met brood en water opgesloten omdat ik ervan beschuldigd werd gesmokkelde tabak te hebben meegebracht.
