De bouw van de HMS Victory werd gestart in 1765 in de Chatham Dockyard en werd opgeleverd in 1778.
Gedurende de volgende 34 jaar bleef ze in actieve dienst met één van de meest beruchte zeelslagen op haar actief : de 'Battle of Trafalgar' in 1805.
In 1812 werd de HMS Victory uit de vaart gehaald en geankerd in de haven van Portsmouth, op de zuidkust van Engeland.
In de volgende 110 jaar, bleef de HMS Victory daar liggen en vervulde verschillende praktische en ceremoniale rollen.
In 1922 werd gevreesd voor het voortbestaan van de Victory en werd ze overgebracht voor herstellingswerken naar het drogdok n° 2 van de Portsmouth's Royal Naval Dockyard. Men werkt daar tot vandaag aan het restaureren van de Victory naar haar '1805 oorlogsconditie'.
