És una plaça força gran ubicada a la part occidental del centre històric. Deu el seu nom alberga l'església i la Casa della Misericòrdia , així com el Tribunal d'Apel·lació.
Es tracta d'una plaça rectangular empedrada amb una font al centre (encara que la plaça no és de vianants), davant la qual s'aixeca un monument a Afonso Henriques . Els edificis que l'envolten tenen façanes de rajoles i grans galeries. El fons de la plaça es perllonga cap a la dreta, formant un petit jardí on se situa el monument a João Franco , del qual la plaça pren el seu nom actual.
També hi ha una petita capella-oratori amb una escultura que representa una de les Estacions de la Creu.
