Die Einwohner von Herentals tragen die Spottnamen "Klokkenververs" und "Peestekers". Sint-Waldetrudis ist der Schutzpatron der Stadt. Früher war es eine Stadt mit einem blühenden Tuchhandel. Heute ist es ein kleinstädtisches Versorgungszentrum mit einer vielfältigen Industrie (Nahrungsmittel-, Metall-, Textil- und Schuhindustrie, Diamantbearbeitung) und entlang der Boudewijnautobahn eine Industriezone von 268 ha mit u.a. einem großen elektrotechnischen Unternehmen.
Einige Sehenswürdigkeiten in Herentals sind unter anderem: die Sint-Waldetrudiskirche mit einem interessanten Altarbild aus dem frühen 16. Jahrhundert, das 1266 gegründete Beginenhof, die Tuchhalle mit Belfried aus 1590, ein Bauernkriegsdenkmal und viele andere.
