La iglesia de Sint-Walburgakerk en Veurne se originó de una capilla de la burguesía condal y primero fue convertida en una iglesia románica, dedicada a Nuestra Señora. Probablemente en el siglo X, la iglesia recibió las reliquias de Santa Walburga, lo que llevó a que el nombre cambiara alrededor de 1100 a Sint-Walburgakerk. La iglesia tenía un capítulo con treinta canónigos. Entre los siglos XIII y XIV, la iglesia fue destruida por un incendio y reconstruida en estilo gótico temprano. La iglesia fue completada a principios del siglo XX con naves laterales y una nave corta, según los planos del arquitecto Van Ascche de Gante.
