Según la tradición, fue en Iria Flavia donde el apóstol Santiago predicó por primera vez durante su estancia en Hispania. Poco después de su muerte, sus discípulos Teodoro y Atanasio llevaron su cabeza y su cuerpo en un barco de piedra desde Jerusalén a Iria. Ataron el barco a un pedrón (gallego para gran piedra), de ahí el nuevo topónimo que se le dio al lugar. Los dos discípulos se quedaron en Iria Flavia (ahora Padrón) para predicar después de haber enterrado al apóstol en Compostela, y el legendario pedrón se puede ver hoy en día en la iglesia parroquial de Santiago de Padrón.
