La Charca es una reserva natural protegida que se encuentra junto a las dunas de Maspalomas, que también están protegidas.
De hecho, este lago se encuentra casi en la desembocadura de un río seco. Entre el lago y el mar hay otra estrecha zona de dunas. Cuando el río, en caso de lluvias abundantes, contuviera agua, terminaría en el lago. En caso de tormentas fuertes, el agua de mar llega sobre la zona de dunas, haciendo que el agua sea salobre.
