La forêt d'Elmpter est une zone forestière à l'ouest de l'Elmpte allemand jusqu'à la frontière germano-néerlandaise. Le bord occidental est formé par un escarpement du milieu du plateau vers le plateau supérieur de la Meuse. Ici, le paysage s'élève d'environ 30 mètres à plus de 50 mètres. La réserve naturelle d'Elmpter Schwalmbruch, avec la vallée de la Swalm, borde la forêt au nord. Au sud, la zone forestière est adjacente au parc national De Meinweg. À l'ouest et au sud se trouve, contre la frontière germano-néerlandaise, la zone naturelle de 250 ha Lüsekamp und Boschbeektal.
La forêt d'Elmpter est traversée par de nombreux chemins en gravier, ce qui en fait un lieu populaire pour les randonneurs, les vététistes et les cyclistes sur gravier.
