La sede amministrativa del distretto era Illertissen, che nel 1954 fu elevato a città. Al momento della sua dissoluzione, il distretto comprendeva 42 comuni. Il distretto di Illertissen non aveva uno stemma.
Il distretto di Illertissen si trovava a ovest della regione bavarese di Schwaben, al confine con il Baden-Württemberg, circa a metà strada tra Ulm / Neu-Ulm e Memmingen.
