Badajoz è una grande città di confine con 150.000 abitanti. Badajoz gode della sua ottima posizione lungo il fiume Guadiana e sfrutta in gran parte anche il commercio tra Portogallo e Spagna. La città è stata nuovamente fondata nel IX secolo dagli arabi sul sito di un antico insediamento visigoto. La città fiorisce rapidamente. Nel 1230 viene riconquistata dal re Alfonso IX di León. La città rimane molto importante ed è spesso testimone di guerre di confine tra Spagna e Portogallo.
