Piccadilly Circus è il centro della capitale e un tempo era il ombelico dell'Impero. Tra il traffico intenso intorno alla piazza, molti visitatori amano rilassarsi sui gradini della fontana di Eros. Nel 1893 Alfred Gilbert fece costruire questo monumento in onore del filantropo Anthony Ashley Cooper, il settimo conte di Shaftesbury. Questo nobile aveva combattuto la massiccia povertà nel XIX secolo con il proprio capitale, creando mense e facendo costruire scuole. L'angelo alato con arco e freccia in cima alla fontana non rappresenta quindi il dio dell'amore, ma è un'allegoria del defunto conte di Shaftesbury (shaft = freccia, bury = sepolto).
