La Piazza Papa Giovanni XIII a Pistoia è nota soprattutto per l'Ospedale del Ceppo.
Si tratta di un antico ospedale pistoiese, fondato nel XIII secolo.
Secondo la leggenda, il nome deriverebbe da un ceppo fiorito miracolosamente in inverno e che, secondo un'apparizione della Vergine Maria, indicò ai devoti mariti Antimo e Bendinella il luogo dove fondare l'ospedale. Un'altra possibilità è che il nome derivi dal "ceppo" cavo del castagno utilizzato per la raccolta delle offerte.
È stato ospedale cittadino fino al 21 luglio 2013, quando è stato sostituito dal nuovo Ospedale San Jacopo, situato nella parte meridionale della città.
