Il museo è ospitato in un antico edificio risalente al XIV secolo.
La mostra espone una varietà di manufatti di origine ellenica (proveniente dalla vicina colonia di Himera) e romana , tra cui un notevole apparato di statue marmoree. La sezione storico-artistica conserva alcune opere di pregio, tra cui un polittico quattrocentesco di Gaspare da Pesaro e un'Annunciazione su tavola di scuola fiamminga .
Recentemente sono state aperte una sezione dedicata all'Ottocento termitano e due sale con l'opera dello scultore locale Filippo Sgarlata. Completano il percorso le collezioni mineralogiche e malacologiche e una cappella con affreschi del XV secolo.
