De Achterhoek ligt letterlijk als een uithoek aan de grens met Duitsland. Het is een typisch dekzandlandschap. Hier vind je één van de oudste gesteenten van Nederland in de groeve bij Winterswijk. Hier werd een kalkafzetting in een tropische zee ooit afgezet, beter gekend als de Muschelkalk. En je vindt er ook nog fossiele pootafdrukken van sauriers in terug. Het is nu een harde steenlaag die gebruikt wordt als bouwsteen in deze streek en ver daar buiten.
