Apeldoorns Kanal løber fra IJssel ved Dieren til IJssel ved Hattem. Det havde fra 1868 til og med 1961 funktionen som "lateralt kanal" parallelt med IJssel. Ved lave og høje vandstande var IJssel meget svær at sejle på grund af utilstrækkelig dybde og stærk strøm. Ruten via kanalen var derfor, især for små skibe, også meget attraktiv.
Kanalen har stadig en funktion i vandforvaltningen af området. Til brug for vandforsyningen får kanalen tilstrømning fra Veluwse sprenge og bække. En spreng eller sprengebæk er en menneskeskabt eller omlagt bæk med sådan gravede kilder, at der bringes grundvand op til overfladen under tryk. Sprengebække blev især brugt til at drive vandmøller og/eller til vand til vaskerier.
