Rumbeke produzierte einen der Spitzenreiter in der Musikwelt. Um 1490 wurde Adriaen Willaert hier geboren. Einige Jahrzehnte später sollte er fünfunddreißig Jahre lang Kapellmeister der San Marcobasilika werden. Ein Kapellmeister ist jemand, der die Leitung bei der Aufführung von Musik hat. Flandern stand damals an der Spitze, wenn es um die Produktion von Musik ging. Adriaen Willaert gilt als die zentrale Figur der Venezianischen Schule und als Pionier des italienischen Madrigals. Ein Madrigal ist eine überwiegend vokale Musikform, die im 14. Jahrhundert in Norditalien entstand.
