Das Kraftwerk Irsching liegt nahe der Stadt Vohburg an der Donau im Ortsteil Irsching. Die Erdgas-befeuerte Anlage besteht aus insgesamt fünf voneinander unabhängigen Blöcken, von denen die zwei ältesten Blöcke Irsching 1 und 2 stillgelegt sind. Die drei jüngeren Blöcke Irsching 3 bis 5 sind zwar aus finanziellen Gründen für die Stilllegung vorgesehen, müssen aber wegen Systemrelevanz als Kaltreserve zur Gewährleistung der Netzstabilität betriebsbereit bleiben.
Während die ersten drei Blöcke für den Erdgas- und Heizöleinsatz ausgelegt sind, nutzen die Blöcke 4 und 5 Erdgas als Brennstoff in einem GuD-Prozess mit hoher Effizienz . Um den Stilllegungswunsch der Blöcke 4 und 5 streiten sich die Bundesnetzagentur und der Betreiber.
