Die Papenkaule ist der trockene Krater, den eine phreatische Explosion vor ca. 10.000 Jahren in den zur Gerolsteiner Kalkmulde gehörenden Dolomit der Munterley nördlich von Gerolstein/Eifel sprengte.
Die nach der Explosion freigesetzte Lava floss allerdings nicht aus dem Schlot der Papenkaule, sondern trat westlich davon in der Hagelskaule zu Tage und strömte südwärts als Sarresdorfer Lavastrom bis ins Kylltal. Da der Dolomit im Untergrund der Papenkaule wasserdurchlässig ist, bildete sich kein Kratersee.
